- 4T: thermal and visual response.
- 4E: mechanical-shutter mapping.
- Compare real outputs from the task you repeat.
The short answer
Choose Matrice 4T when the crew needs thermal observations alongside visual inspection: searching a defined area, examining residual heat, or documenting an apparent temperature anomaly. Choose Matrice 4E when the regular deliverable is an orthomosaic or a reconstructed site model.
The 4E has a 20 MP, 4/3-format wide camera with a mechanical shutter. The 4T has a 48 MP, 1/1.3-format wide camera and a 640 × 512 thermal sensor. Higher pixel count alone does not make the 4T the stronger mapping choice; shutter behavior and the capture workflow matter.

What changes in the field
| Your recurring task | Start with | What to examine in a demonstration |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal search or incident observation | 4T | Resolve a candidate, switch to visual context, and communicate its location. |
| Orthomosaic for a site drawing | 4E | Inspect the processed image for blur, missing coverage and alignment. |
| Facade or site reconstruction | 4E | Check oblique coverage and surfaces that are difficult to reconstruct. |
| Both mapping and thermal response | Two defined workflows | Compare the workload in each role before choosing a shared fleet. |
A useful comparison takes place after landing
For a mapping demonstration, ask for the original photographs and the processed output from the same site. Inspect edges, repetitive roofs, shadows and tall structures. A smooth-looking preview can hide missing surfaces or locally poor alignment.
For a response demonstration, give the pilot an assigned search area and ask another team member to act on the observation. Note whether the handoff contains a location, time, visual image and enough context to find the subject. The test should expose a missing handoff before an actual deployment.
Build the kit around that role
Both aircraft use the Matrice 4 Series ecosystem. Start with the selected edition’s In the Box panel, then add spare power for the day you intend to run. Do not substitute Matrice 4D batteries or charging equipment because the names look similar.
Lighting and audio are optional additions with specific jobs. A search team may need illumination or spoken instructions; a mapping crew may prefer a lighter packing list. Make those choices from the task rather than selecting every accessory.
Common questions
Can the 4T take mapping photographs?
It can take photographs, but select a mapping system around its capture method and the required output. The 4E is the mapping-oriented model in this comparison.
